I plugged in my 4th generation iPod into my MBP with the most current iTunes and found out that it mounts and shows up in iTunes and then the iPod "unmounts" from the desktop, yet is still available in iTunes. It looks like it does this after it is updated. Is this normal? I want my iPod to be visible on my desktop! How can I keep it there?

I may have fixed this. I enabled disk use on my iPod and it is now visible on the desktop after auto-update. Is this typical behavior though?

Yes, it is. The iPod only shows up as a disk on your desktop if you (a) have disk mode enabled, or (b) it's currently updating. Once it's done, it's actually ejected and is safe to unplug. It only stays visible in your iTunes because iTunes now has iPod settings built in, so they leave the icon visible if you want to mess with the various options and "re-update" your library.
