iPod Ipod dock, 4g ipod and remote

i was trying the dock with the remote today and only then did i realize how bad it was, hardly anything works, except volume and play, you cant even go through the ipod with the remote eg through artists etc

i was wondering if there was away you could do the rest of the features like use the menu button

i meant to say 5g ipod not 4g, if it makes a diffrence
