ipod dock + imac + apple remote help

Hey all I just got a 24in imac with 8gigs of ram and love it so much. I also got an apple dock I like to use the remote with the imac but not the ipod I have tried syncing the remote to the imac but that did not help how can i make the remote not control my ipod? thanks all
