iPod Hi-Fi: Lossless or Lossy?

I know that "high quality" drivers deserve high quality audio encoding: WAV, AIFF, Apple Lossless, etc.

Is the iPod Hi-Fi in this class of speakers? Would I hear much of a difference between 256kbps AAC VBR and Apple Lossless? 128kbps AAC and 256kbps AAC VBR/Apple Lossless?
