I remember at the nano release that something was mentioned about being able to view lyrics. This was on the actual apple site.

Does anyone know if you actually can? And if so, is it done through the lyrics feature in itunes?

Thought it would be interesting to find out...

Yes, indeed you can view the lyrics on the nano (and also on the new ipod 5G). To do so, press the center button a few times whilst a song is playing. It takes the lyrics from the lyrics field in itunes, so you need the lyrics in itunes.

How exactly do the lyrics work within iTunes? I can't seem to find the "lyrics field".

In itunes when you "get info" for a single song you should see a spot for Lyrics.

And if you set the "Sing that iTune!" widget up in your Dashboard, it'll automatically find lyrics for the song you're currently playing and add them to the Lyrics field. Very handy!
I'm sure there are other widgets that do this too but I really like the appearance of Sing that iTune - clean, Dashboard like and with the album art.

I REALLY wish they would release an updated firmware for older iPod 4G and below that provides support for lyrics and some of the other cool stuff they added to the new ones.

It's not that big of a deal, I don't think someone is going to upgrade to a new 5G JUST for lyric support.

Comon Apple.

Pretty cool i never would have noticed or tried that until i read it hear, of course i found out a cool tweak like this at MacRumors. I'm not sure i'd actually use it that much however. In public, on public transportation and walking to class i don't typically look at the screen, however on a flight it might be cool to check out the lyrics to a few songs.

Man, I would love to have the lyrics feature in my 40GB iPod Photo... I actually have a pretty big collection of lyrics, and love the lyrics widgets out there (see here).
I have actually discussed having this functionality with a couple of friends, so it is pretty neat that it now exists... too bad I can't justify yet to upgrade to a video iPod :(

The upgrade is not that expensive, if you sell your current iPod. iPod 40 gig would probably go, for close to $300 on ebay.
