i tried to load some of my songs onto my ipod via my new macbook.. but a popup siad that the ipod was windows capable and gave me 4 options: minimize, enlarge, return to system prefs.(for ipod) and close. iobviousy chose the latter.

Download the iPod software updater from here:

Run it and there should be an option to format the iPod or initialize it, and it will be formatted for the Mac. You will lose anything that was on the iPod.

Your mac should be able to read your windows-formatted ipod, and you should be able to get the music off of it before formatting for mac. Try using a program like Senuti to do the transfer. I believe it worked for me when I made the switch.
I use a PC at work and a Mac at home. I was always able to connect the iPod to the Mac when it was Windows formatted. Windows didn't like it, though, when it was Mac formatted.
