I'm stuck and I'm getting mad at the lack of flexibility that I'm stuck with by going with Apple.

I have a G4. I want to buy an HD/MP3 portable device. More importantly, I need a handy portable device to do simple but decent audio recording, and I want to be able to interface it with my computer. This is for things like rehearsals and live shows of my band, and many other little uses.

Of course I want an iPod... duh. But it doesn't do this simple thing! The little mic made by Belkin is crap, and the new one made by whoever looks the same. 8 bit recording, and no way to adjust the input level? Forget it. they call it a "voice recorder", and that's all it's good for, if that. (yes, i tried one).

The iRiver player records directly to MP3 or WAV. And you can plug in an external mic. (Not to mention alot of other cool stuff, like analog and digital ins and outs, and Ogg support.)

But it won't work smoothly with my Mac!

If I just knew how long I'd have to wait for this functionality to come to the iPod... or if it 's even possible... I'd try and wait (although I need it NOW).

But I actually may buy an iRiver in the next few weeks instead.

What happened to the good old days, when Apple made the most flexible and customizable stuff?
