iPod iPOd Mini 2nd gen won't shut off

I've asked before but didn't get a lot of response so I thought I'd give it another go. I cannot turn off my iPOd mini unless it's connected to the computer. Everything else seems ok. And it will indeed turn off once it's connected. But just holding the pause/play button (while disconnected) does nothing. I have reset it = nada.I've tried the 'sleep' command = nada. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks
