My brother has a 1st gen mini, and yesterday morning, the hard drive quit on him. I tried restoring the software, and the iPod updater said hard drive write error, or something like that. I took him to the Apple Store, the guy at the genius bar takes a look at it, and gives him a new iPod, another 1st gen mini. Later when he's listening to his new one, he discovers that all of the music on it doesn't sound right. I don't know how to explain it, but everything's distorted. I told him to delete and re-load everything in case that was the problem, but it did it again. We tried different headphones, that didn't help it. When I tried listening to the MP3s through iTunes, they sounded fine, and when I put the mini into my dock and listened through the line-out on the dock they sounded fine, so I'm guessing its something in the headphone jack and it will be going back to the Apple Store this week, unless anyone knows of something I can possibly fix myself? The EQ is off, so it isnt that.

Thanks

I may be mistaken, but didn't the first iPod mini shipments have a problem with the headphone jack coming unsoldered?

I'd take it back to the Genius Bar and see what they say.
