I've got an iPod Mini 4GB model.

It works perfectly, scrolling through all the windows, loading and unloading songs, mounting on my Mac's desktop, etc.

The one problem - and it's a very BIG problem - is that whenever I try to play a song, it won't start.

It'll just stay at the beginning of the progress bar and not do anything.

I can pause it an unpause it and it still stays there.

I can forward ot rewind it and it'll move to whatever spot I want, but then stay stuck at that spot and not play (for example, I can forward it to the midpoint of the song, press play, and it'll just stay stuck there).

I can toggle the hold switch and it still won't play.

Basically, it won't do anything.

I'm very good with electronics and have tried opening it up and checking all the connections but everything's well seated.

I can't find any reference to this online, so I was hoping someone on the forum could help...

Have you tried any of the 5 R's:
- Reset (toggle hold on/off and hold down enter + menu until the Apple reappear)
- Reinstall (reinstall/upgrade iPod firmware)
- ...eeeh... have to look up the rest... ;)

Edit: Here it is: The 5 R's... :)

The same thing happened to me and just do the 5 rs and you will be fine.

maybe the hard drive is the problem, I have similar issues with my mini. Been in repair 3 times now.

Sometimes a firm slap on the top right helps, but don't quote me on that

otherwise try reformatting

I've got the same thing with my G5 iPod. I just reset and it is fine. But a few days later it will happen again. Get's to be a bit annoying. :(

I tried the 5 R's, but still no luck.

It must be a bad drive.

Which is weird, because it mounts fine, and seems perfect besides the one feature, which unfortunately is the ability to PLAY an MP3...

Has anyone found a solution to the above problem, I'm having the same with my ipod classic 5th gen, tried the R's, nothing and I've tried multiple times to restore it--nothing. Everything else works. One of you smart ipod dudes must have an answer to this. Can I swap the hard disk?

I know it was several years ago now, but I think it had something to do with a faulty hold button.

If I recall correctly, I disassembled the thing down to nothing, reassembled it and the problem was gone.

Take this all with a grain of salt, though, since like I said it was a few years back now!
