iPod iPod nano 3G not Recognized by iTunes

I've got an 8 GB black nano. I'm using 10.5.7 with iTunes 8.2.1.

I got home an plugged it in, but iTunes gave me a message saying something like it couldn't find the proper disk, so it couldn't sync my iPod.

I reset the iPod by holding the center button and menu and tried again, without luck. I've repeated this several times to no avail.

It is recognized in Finder, however.

Aside from a restore, what can I do?
