iPod ipod nano 6th gen working but iTunes prompts for restore

my iPod nano 6th generation is working and i can listen to music but when i plug into iTunes it is either not recognized or iTunes prompts me to restore the iPod

is there any way to fix this without a restore
if not how can i get my music back before i restore
iPod is formatted for mac
