Let me preface this by saying that I already have an iPhone 5s to go along with an iPod Nano. The benefit of me looking at a Nano is to have a small and light device to listen to music from if on a treadmill or something where I don't want to use the larger iPhone.

I bought a used gen 7 Nano and am a little underwhelmed. The Nike+ functionality sucks since I really wanted to be able to sync the pedometer data when connected to iTunes. After chatting with Nike directly, they shut that down some time ago and have no plans to add it back. Only workouts can be synced (which I don't care as much about).

I also looked at an older gen 6 Nano. Not as many functions as the gen 7, but I like the size of it and can get it for a touch cheaper than the gen 7. But there are some trade-offs. In both cases, I am not interested in their capabilities to show photos and videos. Just to be a light and portable music player (would have liked the Nike+ pedometer sync, but oh well).

Gen 6
"Pros"
  • Smaller
  • Lighter
  • Can get a nicer watch strap
  • Integrated clip
"Cons"
  • Old 30-pin connector
  • No bluetooth
  • Older model
  • Slightly less battery life

Gen 7
"Pros"
  • Newest model
  • Bluetooth
  • Same lightning adapter as my iPhone
"Cons"
  • Too large for wrist watch strap
  • Nike+ pedometer integration not as advertised
  • Slightly more expensive

What do you think? Or should I just not even bother with a Nano at all? Thanks!

I have used both the 6G and 7G nanos extensively. If you're just looking for a small, lightweight music player, nothing beats the 6G. The clip is perfect for using as a pedometer (note that the 6G no longer syncs steps to Nike+ either), whereas the 7G isn't easily worn on the hip.

Lack of BT on the 6G is the real PITA, but you can buy a 30-pin BT adapter that'll work with most headphones. The Sony one comes to mind.

The only real con for the 6G that you haven't already mentioned is the sleep/wake button. The ones on the 6G are notoriously weak. They will break at some point. Mine seemed to go at the 10 month mark. The first one was replaced under warranty. The replacement is out of warranty, but the button broke at about 8 months.

My wife's nano 6G's button hasn't gone yet, but she didn't use it as much as I did.

I use the 7G for running, and the integrated BT and Nike+ receiver make it the perfect workout iPod. Much better than the 6G for working out. Although, in a perfect world, I would prefer the size and form factor of the 6G, with the integrated BT and Nike+ receiver, provided they stop using glue for the sleep/wake button.

The discontinuation of the Nike+ pedometer data is very disappointing.

Bluetooth would be nice for sure, but not a must for me.

Since I posted mid-day, I picked up a 6th gen at my local Gamestop (can return if needed). So far, I definitely like the form better than the 7th gen. We'll see if the battery is decent.

I would be content if the next Nano was just like the 6th gen with the following:
  • Bluetooth
  • Ability to bluetooth sync to my iPhone as well and Mac
  • Pedometer data BT sync to the iPhone (then would completely obsolete my FitBit)
  • Lightning connector

Just curious, how much did you pay for the new 6G?

I am still refining my AppleScript that another member here has helped me loads with. It takes the data from the local Nike+ files on the Nano and turns them into a spreadsheet. My main use is for the pedometer information that isn't included in the sync.

I will try and fit some time in my schedule to work on it some more. But it may be awhile as I'm working on other projects. (For those that are interested)

Hopefully you like the 6th gen. I just thought it was way too small and was really happy when they went back to a bigger Nano.

It was used for $79.99. But I had some trades with bonuses and so on so I think it was really a net of about $52.

So Sorry I did…..

I got my used nano, 7th gen. from Apple about a month ago, for $100. Okay, so I liked how it looked and felt, BUT now I'm really really starting to hate it. I have the 1st gen. and 2nd gen. and loved how it felt and oh yes, the click-wheel.

I missed out on the other generation with the click-wheel, oh well. My point is, this 7th gen. is So SO annoying to operate while I'm running or fast walking on the treadmill. It is difficult to skip songs, I keep tuning up/down the volume with my fingers without knowing, the sleep/wake gets at my nervous, and the home button - not sure which finger keeps pressing it on/off. You should see me the other day at the other gym, I was going nuts.

I hold it in my right arm when running/walking. I NEVER had such problems as this on the "normal" iPod nano with the click-wheel. Apple really screwed this one.

I want to a previous generation with the click-wheel, but I'm seeing high $$$$ for them………..????
