I have two iPod Nano 2nd generations...a 4gb and an 8gb. The problem is, neither if them work any longer. Any ideas on possible fixes?

The 8gb syncs with itunes just fine, battery charges, and hold switch works, but NONE of the buttons work on the clickwheel. I can't pause, stop, play, rewind, fast forward, or scroll between songs!

The 4gb nano powers up to an apple logo and then freezes. Resetting it brings it to a screen that says "use itunes to restore your ipod". Well, I can't restore it because itunes won't recognize it! The 4gb nano's scroll wheel works and I can get into diagnostic mode, but it sometimes randomly shuts off when performing tests.

Any suggestions? I'd love to get at least one working ipod out of these....

From my experience of taking apart iPods (and ftr, ive only done it once), the scroll wheel is an element that is separate from the circuit board entirely, connected by a ribbon cable and a small connector. You have two possibilities here:

1. There is something wrong with the actual scrollwheel on the 8GB nano. The solution would be to swap the casings of the two nanos, which would give you a working 8GB nano.

2. The cable just came loose, and needs to be popped back into place. I would really hope that is the problem, because it would be really easy to fix.

Here is a disassembly guide for a 2G nano. It should be pretty obvious in the guide where the connector is.

Call Apple and tell them their batteries overheat the will replace both of them for you free of charge. Happen with mine but mine actually did heat up.
