ipod or Palm zire?

I lost my Palm vx and am considering replacing it with an IPOd.
All I use the palm for is addressbook and (some) dates.

If I get an ipod will it synch with my existing palm desktop software or is it manual renetry or are there utilities fo rthis sort of thing?

I like the ipod b/c of the firewire drive and cool factor...
