ipod os on external harddrive

Is there a way to use and external harddrive and have it function like an ipod when connected to a computer or in this case my car stereo?
Would there be a way to partition it with the ipod or iphone software?

Reason i ask is i want to use my harddrive in my car through an the Alpine high speed ipod function and keep the way the menus work.
