I have been having major troubles when trying to update my iPod while keeping my external firewire disk plugged in. Some background:

I have an ext. disk that has an extra firewire port so I can daisy chain, hook up other devices, etc. When I had a 2g iPod I used to be able to leave the disk plugged in and plug the iPod cable directly into the second port on the disk. Now with my 3g iPod, it will work that way, but only 50% of the time. The other 50% my iPod starts to update, then freezes, or it updates and never unmounts (automatically or manually). Either way I end up having to reset the iPod with the occasional software restore needed. iSync is similarly quirky too.

I never have any problems, however when I plug the iPod directly into my computer. This is a pain because I have to unmount the external disk unplug it, etc.

Does anyone know if I plugged a firewire hub into my powerbook and then the disk and ipod into that if this would solve my problems?
