I have an 30 gb ipod with the 4 buttons on top, and it is just stuck in Disk mode. My computer cannot recognize it, but yet the ipod still charges when connected. My ipod software cannot recognize an ipod is connected. How do I somehow restore the ipod even though my computer can't recognize it. (Everything on my computer is up to date)

A few questions to help us get started:
Do you see your iPod as a drive if you open up Disk Utility (Applications>Utilities)?

Does the iPod flash the Do Not Disconnect warning?

Does iTunes recognize and try to sync with the iPod?

I'm not sure if this is how it works on 3rd gen ipods, but try plugging the ipod into the wall, then holding the menu and play buttons for about 5 seconds. that should reset it, without making you lose your music.

I lost my power adaptor at a hotel. I only charge via firewire. And I don't care if I lose my music on it, I can always do it over.

you don't need to be connected to the power adapter to reset. hold menu and play until you see the apple logo on the screen. that'll reset your ipod, although i have no idea if it'll solve your problem or not; can't hurt, though.

same problem

Goodtimes, I'm having the same problem. Were you ever able to fix this? I have a mac (os x.3) and a pc (win XP) and I have the same exact problem. any help on this issue would be greatly appreciated

same problem tooo

My 30 GIG with updated software is doing the following:

1) upon turning on it stalls, shows the folder icon with !
2) it then stalls again for several seconds and goes into Disk Mode- with the
"ok to disconnect ?" on it. The Mac (with Panther) will not recognize the drive at all, iTunes won't show it, and the Disk Utiliy cannot see it either.
3) doing the recommended Menu/Play and also Menu/Play/Forward/Reverse button options does nothing. It still goes into disk mode.
4) The ipod is very warm to the touch.

Any help???? Any similar situation?

a good friend of mine had similar probs, and he did the thing where u hold menu and play down... and it restarted just fine after the 5 sec hold
