iPod iPod serial number . . .

Hi my ipod was stolen at boarding skl and I have a suspision that another guy took it.

I have connceted it to my computer hundreds of times and it has popped up with that serial number loadsa times. Is this info saved anywhere? so i can bring up the serial without connecting the ipod?

You could try here and clicking on the 'Upload the serial number of my last connected iPod' button in the top right corner.

Failing that, do you have a receipt from the iPod? Or is it on the iPods box/instructions?

welshandrew's tip should work if that iPod was the last one you connected to your computer. Are you on a PC or a Mac? If you're on a Mac and the above site doesn't work, try this:

(This is easiest if you have Developer Tools, and thus Property List Editor, installed on your machine. You'll still be able to see the info in Text Edit if you don't have PLE installed, but it won't be formatted, so it'll be tougher to see what you're looking for.)

Go to <your hard drive>/Library/Preferences and open the file com.apple.iPod.plist. Expand the Root section, and then the Devices section. There you should see the iPods you've connected to your computer with some information about them, most importantly the serial number of the iPod and the last time it was connected.

Ive done this but i can't find how to expand the root (because i dont have xcode / developers code) but I have opened the .plist file in text edit and I get a load of unreadable text but in there is the following serial number: JQ543L0XSZA. There are a few other serial numbers as well, but the one above matches the one on the back of my (Suspected) Ipod.

Well, well.....I, too, have been a victim of theft but like a dumba$$, I left my ipod sitting at a computer terminal while I went to class. On my way from class, i noticed I did not have it with me and when i went back for it, my ipod was gone. then I had nothing to give to police since it needed to be reported to local law enforcement and without a SN I really can't be accusing people of taking it. Sure, I lost it on campus with over 15,000 students but I do have a feeling who has it. it's funny that people follow routines because it's that routine that I plan on using to catch this person. Anyway, I digress. The reason why I'm saying all this now is because I could not find the SN for my ipod. I could use Apple's online resources and do the....."What's the last number connected to my ipod" trick, but problem was it was my gf's new red nano I got her. So I had no box, had no reference, thought I registered it on Apple's website....but didn't and I really was lost about this situation. I guess i just now realize how important serial numbers can be. Point is, with this little tip in the forum, I was able to recover my SN. Yay!! ....so that's half the battle. Like I said, I just have to see this student with it and he (or she) is busted. I really don't know if I will get it back.....esp a new 80 G ipod video, but we will see. WildCowboy.....thanks a ton for posting this!!!!!!

I certianly did! But the guy nicked the case and headphones and sold them on ebay! But he told the teachers that he never found it with the case or headphones! How annoying!!!!!

But he was suspended for a week! But i thought the police should be involved!

If on a PC open this webpage and click on upload last serial number! If your on a mac follow the instructions above!

I found a good way to find all the files associated with your iPod, open spotlight and search "iPod" then open the .plist files in textEdit! It may all look like gobbildy gook but if you read every line you will find it shows your serial of the ipods conected to your comp!

have you tried searching spotlight for "ipod" then opening all the .plist files and trying to +F your copied serial number?

If you want the last iPod information in a readable form (on Mac of course), and don't have the developer tools installed, open up the Terminal and type in

defaults read com.apple.iPod Devices

Hmm well personally I think your a bit stuck in the fact that you connected your brothers iPod! Are there any recognisable scratches or proof of purchase? the serial number is sometimes on apple reciepts!

If you registered it online, I suppose you can send Apple an apoligetic email asking for your regisitered serial. I dont know if they keep it but they would probably have to go through alot of names etc. may take some time!

When I double click Macintosh HD It comes up with the attached window...

As you can see "library" is clearly marked.

If your Mac doesn't open this up when clicking on Macintosh HD, click on your user name on the left hand side panel and you should get the attached screen!

Good thing you got it back. Police involvement though...ehh....

There isn't any way to actually prove he stole it. He could easily avoid accusations by denying knowing it was yours and he though it was his that he lost. If I were the judge on this case though, I'd give him a hefty fine.
