Iam thinking about getting one for mum for her birthday, but I read a small review in which which said it's difficult to control and you have to use the supplied headphones remote.

Does anyone own one? Are the version 2 models better and easier to use?

As she is a Christian I was hoping to buy some books or/and bible verses on there if this was possiable?

I've had both versions of the shuffle. So I hope I can help.
Earlier versions did have the controls on the outside of the
unit itself, and for this reason, and this reason alone, I would suggest getting her one of the "postage stamp" versions. The new ones do have more memory, and are
sleeker. But the controls on the headset itself is the one
thing I would worry about for your mom. It's sometimes
difficult for me to use them. "arthritic fingers" and if the
headset breaks you are dropped to 2 choices.. buying another from apple, or buying the adapter from belkin,
(with controls) that will allow you to plug in your own
headset.

I'd go for the "stamp" version for her. Just for easier to use
reasons.
