ipod slow?

i formatted my 40 gig ipod on my pc and then connected it to my mac (dual 500 g4) to xfer files and its a *lot* slower than it used to be in xfering files (like 2mb/s and less).... is this typical since its not in HFS+ anymore? it was transfering much faster when I had it formatted for the mac

I turned off the volume check thingy on both iTunes and the iPod and now I'm getting about 5 megs/sec.... can't I get any faster than this? I get like 10 megs/sec over my school's ethernet...
