IPod storage in Win and MacOS

I'd like to buy a new 40G IPod; my question is: can I use it as an external hard disk to transfer data from my Mac to my PC without using third party software? Do both Win XP and MacOS X 10.1.5 recognize the IPod as an external storage device? Thanks.
