Hi,

I recently was gifted an old iPod Touch 1G from my sister who recently bought a newer one. I did a full erase & restore on it and noticed that I'm having trouble connecting via wifi.

I originally tried to connect at work - on an OPEN network - and although I can see the network listed with one bar (Netgear), I get an "Unable to join network 'Netgear'" message.

When I touch the iPod to the router itself, I get full bars, and it connects - until I move away from the router (we're talking a matter of inches)

Later that day, I tried to connect at home, and saw the same issue (my home network uses WPA)...

Other devices at both sites (an iBook G4 from 2005, a Blackberry Curve 8530, other computers, etc) can connect to both routers without any trouble.

I'm positive that it's not a configuration setting with either router, because I can successfully use the wifi for apps like Safari when I'm touching the router. It seems like it's either an antenna issue or something with the case.

My next step was to open the case up, and make sure the wifi section was "in tact" and it seems to be. The brassy/gold colored antenna is secured in the four little pegs that wrap it around the top and the side of the iPod, and the little "nub" on the back piece that detaches seems like it's making contact with the brassy circle on the iPod itself, though there is some discoloration on the brassy circle.

It's using iOS 3.1.3 as far as I know.

Any suggestions for the Wifi? Until then it's still a great upgrade to my iPod Classic that I've had since ~2003.

Thanks!
Pilot

Edit: Does anyone know of a way to "clean" the black plastic area that is supposed to funnel the Wifi signal? Maybe it's blocking/degrading the signal.
