So I have an old ipod touch 2g MB version with a broken home button and used redsn0w's DFU ipsw feature and did a restore on itunes and seemed to get it into the DFU mode however, neither redsn0w nor itunes seems to recognize the device anymore and I can't go into recovery mode since the home button is broken. I tried using tiny umbrella and greenpois0n since I read some things (afterwards) indicating that redsn0w might not be able to recognize it and greenpois0n might but it didn't work and tiny umbrella didn't work either. It was done on a macbook so I tried plugging it into my pc and device manager lists it as "Unknown USB Device". Any help or advice on the issue? The firmware it was on is 4.1 and I can't "turn it back on" since it seems to be in DFU mode.

You're still using a 2g? Congrats. That was my first device. I would stop wasting time fixing it and test yourself to a new iPod. They're really cheap online and you deserve it.

Well I found the device in some of my old things and was hoping to use it as an airplay device (through airfloat) for an older ipod speaker dock and to add assistive touch features (broken home button) which is what led me to trying to jailbreak it in the first place. If there's nothing I can do and it's bricked forever that's fine, no harm no foul, but it would be nice if there were a fix.

it's a long shot but maybe if you install/downgrade an older version of iTunes, it will recognize your ipod touch?

Yeah this might work. Apple probably removed support for the device in iTunes to reduce file size, so I would try an old iTunes. If that can't recognize it, you'll have to find a new device.

Okay yeah, I'lll download an older version of iTunes, fingers crossed that it works. I'm going to install iTunes 10.3.1 since that was released the closest to the release of iOS 4.1.

Well I tried downloading and using iTunes 10.7 (my computer wouldn't run 10.3.1) and it didn't work, thanks for the suggestion though. I'm going to see if allowing the battery to drain and then attempting to plug it back in will resolve the issue (exiting DFU mode or allowing itunes or my computers to even detect the device in DFU mode) either way I'm guessing it's over for the device but I'll update in a week or so after the battery has drained. Thanks for the help.

No problem. You're really dedicated to this device. I would have given up once I realized the home button was broken :)

Yeah it holds some sentimental value being one my earlier devices so I wanted to find a use for it but if it's done then it's done, can't do anything about that.

I get that. I tried to do the same thing with my 2g, but I couldn't and its in a drawer somewhere. Great device in its time.
