I have had alot of failures with the input jack
and I solved it by removing the jack and taking the ribbon cable off the jack reinstalling the
Jack and hard wiring the leads to the pads
I used wirewrap wires Most of the defects are because of the ribbon cable

I also had a lot of problems with the audio jack on my 3 year old 2nd Generation iPod Touch.

I solved them by buying a new 4th Gen Touch. I am very happy with the speed increase, the better display and newer OS.
Plus I can use the old iPod as a remote control
