iPod touch Ipod Touch 2nd generation portrait locked up

I am new to this forum and have a problem with my Ipod touch second generation. The screen is locked in the portrait mode and I cannot change it. I was reading some of the postings and thought it was not even possible with this unit. Can anyone help me unlock it? I have the latest software update installed but this problem was there before the update.

In some things you can't put it into portrait; that's all I know.
