So here's the story:
I have an iPod Touch 2G (8GB) and recently upgraded to the flashy new 3.0 software - which I admit made me feel all warm and fuzzy inside (despite the cost of $9.95). Then I noticed that all my music was gone. AH! My first reaction was to freak out - typical. I also saw that I had the same exact free space as before I upgraded to 3.0. Hm. I thought, "Maybe it's still on my iPod 'somewhere' floating around." So... AHA! I plugged it into my computer and opened iTunes. Sure enough, all my music was there. But I could only see it in iTunes (couldn't access it or play it). Checking my iPod once again, I still didn't see my music appear in my iPod's UI. Then being Curious George I decided to manually manage my iPod's music in iTunes. Sure enough, I was then able to not only access and play my iPod's music in iTunes (duh!), but all my music magically reappeared on my iPod!
Anyway, if this happened to you, just plug your iPod into your computer, open iTunes, click on your iPod's icon in the left panel, and select the checkbox "Manually manage music and videos" and click Apply. I imagine if you had already selected this feature, you may not have this problem. Or if you do, it may help to uncheck the box, click Apply, then check it again.
Not sure why this is, and I really hope Apple caught this major fluke elsewhere before I did. (Love you, too, Apple!)
