I'm buying an iPod Touch 3G tomorrow and am wondering if it would be possible to downgrade the OS from 3.1.1 to 3.0 so I could then jailbreak it?

Would this slow down the iPod since the 3G is not meant to run 3.0? Would other problems come from doing this?

I really want to jailbreak my iPod Touch when I get it and there is no jailbreak available for 3.1.1. so I really want to downgrade...

An alternative would be to wait for a JB for 3.1.1, does anyone have any speculation on when this could be released?

Thanks.

It's virtually impossible for the new iPod touch. First, it needs iTunes 9 (new iPods always need the latest version of iTunes when they are released). Second, iTunes 9 doesn't let users downgrade to any software from before 3.1.1 (3.1 if it's an iPhone). Third, usually the version of the software that comes preinstalled on new iPods is the earliest version that can be installed. Each model gets it's own special software. The 3rd gen touch is specified as 'iPod3,0' in the software file (3,0 = 3rd gen). Any software from before this will only be for the 1st gen (iPod1,0) and the 2nd gen (iPod2,0). There is no pre-3.1.1 software for the 3rd gen - even if you got around the iTunes problem (which you can't as iTunes 8 won't recognise the new touch), then it wouldn't let you proceed with restoring to an earlier software as it's for the wrong model; it will literally come up with a window saying "this software is incompatible with this device", and will only give you the option to 'OK' it, which just returns you to iTunes without doing anything.

Basically... you're out of luck :(
