This ipod touch was found. I've unsuccessfully tried to locate it's owner including calling apple. It is locked out. I have tried everything I can find to get it into recovery mode to no avail.

Power down. Hold home button. Plug USB into ipod after already having plugged into computer. I've done this repeatedly and it will not work. It boots to apple icon and the into os. Have iTunes installed.

I have tried tiny umbrella and rec boot. Neither seem to recognize device is attached. ITunes sees it though and errors out due to device being locked.

It MAY be that I'm using windows 8 computers. First a 64 bit and then a 32 bit. I'm going to try on a windows x machine and possibly Mac tomorrow.

In the interim. .. Any thoughts?

Put it into DFU mode (Google it), not recovery mode.

I did try that as well and couldn't get it to go. I've read how tricky it can be so I will try again.

If I do...how will DFU mode allow me to restore / reset the device. It seems a method to flash firmware
