Wouldn't it be far more susceptible to damage now because the screen rises above the side? so if you drop the iPod on it's side wouldn't it just crack the entire screen?

Also, because it's rather silly to start a new thread for a simple question. What of the iPhone 3GS' oleophobic screen protective layer? did the iPod touch 3 or 4 get this?
 
I can't answer your durability question.

But the oleophobic screen is resistant to fingerprints. None of the iPod touches have this.
