Hi,
A friend asked me to put some music on his Touch for him. It connected to my modem by wireless it seems and said it wanted to upgrade to iOS 5.1.1 so I said OK. The upgrade failed and now it is a brick. The only screen it will show is the battery charging image when connected to USB port on a computer. In standalone it will not turn on at all. I have been on to Apple's helpline and they have walked me through all the troubleshooting steps, I have tried iMacs, PCs, different USB ports, reinstalling iTunes, restarting the computer etc.; nothing works. Note that it will only be recognised by the computer after holding the 2 buttons for 10 secs then releasing the power and holding the front button a bit longer to enter DFU mode. It is then possible to press the 'Restore' button in iTunes and it attempts to rewrite the software on the device, a process which always fails, generally with a 200x error. Looking at the logs using Console in OS X it appears that software is installed to the iPod then it is sent a restart command, after which it does not become 'visible' again and the process fails. It would appear to be a USB problem but both original and new 'other' USB cables have been tried, different USB ports have been tried, and as I already said both new iMacs and PCs have been tried, all with the latest version of iTunes installed. Please could anyone offer some useful advice on what to do in this case. Thank you in advance.

The only thing I can think of is to try installing iOS via a jailbreaking program.

I recommend redsn0w. Its very user friendly and if you get stuck theres plenty of guides online. If that gets it working then you can simply restore via itunes if you dont want to keep it jailbroken.
