iPod touch iPod touch 4g won't turn on why?

Can Somewon please help the battery got too drained so my iPod shuts down and it won't power on do I need to charge before I can use my iPod touch? It's a 4thgen black with iOS5 it gose back to the home screen then it turns of it self please give me troubleshooting of chargeing the battery
