iPod touch Ipod touch 5 wont connect to earpods

So yesterday i bought some new earpods with remote an mic for my ipod touch 5.
But when the music is playing and i try to change the volume or stop the song with my earpods it wont work.
i even tried resetting my ipod.
Could this be the fault of my ipod or the earpods?
