iPod touch iPod Touch & iPhone - 3.0 upgrade

I am getting a new 3 GS on Friday, my first iPhone. I already have a 1st gen iPod Touch, and would like to upgrade to 3.0. Does the fact that I will have an iPhone with 3.0 installed (presumably) mean that I don't need to pay the $9.95 for the upgrade? Will iTunes recognize that I have a device with 3.0 already and thus allow me to upgrade the Touch without having to download again?
