Other than the camera function, the major difference between the iPod touch and the iPhone is (Duh!) the phone function.

Now the gap between the two is being narrowed. The iPod touch CAN be modified to make phone calls with VOIP. See this http://gizmodo.com/339042/first-ipod-touch-voip-call

It's not clear whether the iPod touch can receive calls; I suspect it can't.

Don't expect Apple to add VOIP function to the touch since that would be a direct competition to the iPhone.

I still couldn't imagine carrying around an iPod Touch and a cell phone though. Just wouldn't be right.

Oh give it a rest. You have to carry keys, a wallet etc. It isn't that big of a deal carrying a phone and an Ipod. Trust me, the world will not end having to carry one extra device.

hey, here's a difference...
i can check my internets while walking down the street!

I carry my touch in my right pocket and my phone in my left. I don't plan on buying an iPhone until they are available to more than just AT&T customers and I'm not really missing it now.

All that being said, I still don't really see the point of VoIP on the touch.

Yeah, but I bet that eventually the entire world will be a Wi-Fi hotspot, that would save us all a lot of time. ;)

Yeah it's a matter of time before Wifi Hotspots are everywhere. SF Meraki is a pretty cool idea and is helping spread wifi throughout San Francisco.

I'd imagine it's an idea that can work in most any populated area.

Edit: though the plan for City Issued free wifi totally fell through, hehe

Wow:eek:

That would be great!

Bet googles gonna make that soon lol:D

If memory serves-- it was that plan that fell through in San Francisco, lol. I think they just couldn't come to terms they (city and google) could agree on.

It's a fantastic idea, but financially could be an issue.

I prefer having my communications device and my music/entertainment device running on two different batteries.

I don't even want a frigan iPhone. I DONT WANT THE PHONE. I already have one.

I would suggest that if you don't have a mike then you didn't really get it to work. If you need a mike you can try here http://blog.wired.com/gadgets/2007/12/touch-4-voip-mi.html or here for a nicer one http://touchmods.wordpress.com/ (about 1/3 of the way down the page)

So can I. Portland has free wifi in many parts of the city, and I don't have to bother with EDGE or a monthly fee.

while metro-fi does have free wifi in portland, its currently limited to downtown portland, and parts of inner-se/ne portland.. also, there will be no more expansion of metro-fi, and as soon as the contract is up, the city will have to find a new provider, due to a contract dispute between the two.
