iPod touch iPod Touch issues

OK here is the dilemma: The Ipod works and all, but not the touch part. Idk what happened: One moment, im putting in my password to my iPod touch, the next, it stops! It still turns on, but the touch screen isn't working! Whats going on with it, like is it hardware or software failure?

Its a First Gen refurbished.
