iPod touch iPod Touch Mail Protocol?

I'm planning on getting an iPod Touch, and I'll probably use the Safari for MySpace. I have this thing where I have Mail let me know when I have a new message/comment etc. Can I connect my Gmail account on the Mail iPod Touch protocol?

The Mail App allows Gmail account use.

The mail app allows for the IMAP protocol which means in laymens terms any actions done on the iPod touch (viewing emails, deleting them) will be carried over to the Gmail server.
