iPod touch ipod touch not restoring unkown error 14

can anyone offer any help?
i have a 2nd gen ipod touch, i was messing about with itunes etc and it told me there was a software update for ipod. so, i downloaded it and attempted to update. this failed and put my ipod into recovery mode, i have attempted at least 10 "restores" and every time i get halfway through and it displays

this ipod cannot be restored unkown error 14

thanks for replies guys but, ive tried all those things.

it seems to get maybe 1/3 the way through then comes up the error message

taking it to apple store (glasgow uk) friday lunchtime to see if they know how to do it,
aint paying for nowt as it was their "update" that bricked the thing
