So my cousin and close friend took his life this Monday, and left me a bunch of his things, including a 1st gen iPod touch. When I try to turn it on, it stays at the apple logo, and then powers itself off in about 10 seconds. Now I know there's a lot of threads about this issue, but all the ones I've seen give directions on how to restore the device and erase all user data. It is really important to me that I can keep the data, if at all possible. Any help with this issue would be greatly appreciated!

Try a hard reboot by holding down the homebutton+lock button for about 10 seconds
