iPod touch iPod touch3g battery died how to put in recovery mode

My iPod touch 3G battery died and iTunes won't sense it. Neither will it charge via computer or through any wall outlet ive tried different USB and different wall adapters but to no avail so how could I put my iPod into recovery mode if all it keeps showin is a plugged and voltage sign?
 
Plug it into itunes (it doesn't matter if it sees it.) Hold the power and home button for 15 seconds and then hold the home button for 10 seconds.
