iPod iPod video hdd in USB hdd caddy

Hi guys
Had a look around and can't see anything relevant to my question.
Ok I took hdd out of my old iPod video (5th gen I think)
Anyway iPod was knackered.
So bought USB hhd caddy. Installed hdd and connected to my laptop. Laptop recognises the device in device manager but not in windows explorer.
Ok I understand the the file format is probably not recognised by windows. Is there anyway I can retrieve the music on the hdd?

If you have a friend with a Mac, you can probably plug it into the Mac and copy it to another hard drive/flashdrive.
