So I used handbrake to get a dvd ready to be put on the ipod, it is on the desktop and is now in my itunes library but when i try to put it on ipod it says that type of video will not work? Any suggestions?

Are you able to play it in QuickTime? If not, maybe something went wrong with the encoding and the file is messed up.
 
Yes the files work in quicktime

Hmm... maybe the file is bigger than the max specs that can be imported and that's why it won't add to the library. Does it exceed any of these?

MPEG-4 video, up to 2.5 Mbps, 640 by 480 pixels, 30 frames per sec., Simple Profile with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48 kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats
