Okay so I recently got an iPod Classic 80 gb. When I go into, say music, my wheel does not sense my touch for 2-3 seconds, and when it finally does, it lags, and jumps from, say number 2-4, not as smooth as my old iPods. It goes smoother after a while though, but it feels kind of cracky. Anyone experienced it, should I contact apple or just leave it be? It IS pretty annoying.

I have this issue, the click wheel is a bit different in behavior but I notice if I place a large amount of my thumb on the wheel and scroll it behaves accordingly. It doesn't work so great with just the tip of your finger, more like your whole fingerprint needs to be on it. I admit, kinda annoying.

I'd call Apple about it though, but does it happen when you go into Songs? And it has to display thousands of songs , or just the menu music and it just has to display a few entrys?

I think I have a slight fault with my wheel and wondered whether to return the ipod.
The white wheel itself is raised by about 2mm at the top of the wheel and about 1mm at the bottom. on the sides the wheel is flush with the ipod face. This wasnt like this on the previous Ipod :(

I got it from M&S and was going to take it back there first, if no joy i might visit apple.
Anyone else had this issue?

My 80 gig has the wheel raised in the way you describe. I figured it was intentional do you could feel where it is without looking. My UI is pretty snappy; have you upgraded the firmware?

I have this problem. When I select a specific artist it take 2-3 seconds for the iPod to load the album art work. While that's happening I can't get the click wheel to scroll. I just figured it had something to do with the album art loading.

and when it finally does, it lags, and jumps from, say number 2-4, not as smooth as my old iPods.

I never have this problem. Once the wheel responds and I start scrolling it works fine.

UPDATE: I just played around with my 80gb classic. If I just go into songs there is no delay and I can start scrolling immediately. If I select artist and use more of my thumb, like a previous poster suggested, I don't get a delay - I can start scrolling *almost* instantly.

Well, I took it back and they swapped it, it was definitely faulty and sticking up. I have another and it is raised only very very slightly but now its uniform all the way around so i am happy with it.
Although I wonder how they are been made as I went into the Apple shop and checked out all the other classics with varying results!
some were raised bad and uneven and a couple were perfectly flush with the rest of the ipod face!

apple stores

i noticed this issue with several of the ipod classics in my local apple store in the last few months while considering a new ipod. i've decided to stay away from the classic for this reason. holding out for better ipod touch by the end of the year

hope you get it sorted out with apple

i did thanks, the one i have now is *ok* but i am still not happy with it as the classic with the new firmware doesnt play video back when connected to my car audio/video system (pioneer Avic-D3).
This along with the fact that when i used the same earphones and song on my G5 80gb ipod side by side with the classic 80gb, the old G5 sounded noticeably very different, it was more quite with not as much bass. Both ipods had the same audio settings aswell.
The classic's new interface is great (although still slow for my liking) but for me, my previous 5th gen knocks spots of the classic for sound quality. The Ipod is supposed to be a music player, so keeping my 5th gen and the classic is now up for sale on ebay.
