I have an iPod classic, 80GB, and when I try to boot it up it won't pass the Apple logo screen. I've tried putting it in disk mode (which it enters successfully), but iTunes won't restore it because it says it's being used by another application. Help! :(

iTunes 10 is very buggy with some specific iPods. My iPod 5G 30GB won't sync for more than 30 seconds without complaining about some -50 error. I have to stop and click sync over 9000 times to successfully sync it fully.

Your best bet is to install Windows in some way and try restoring there, then do another restore through OS X to make it Macintosh formatted again.

At least, the Windows method syncs my iPod fully with no complaints, so I'm guessing it should work in your case too.

Yeah I tried the Windows method, but iTunes on Windows gives me an error 1439, in and out of disk mode, on several different USB ports. I'm starting to think the HDD might be shot or something?
