iPod Ipod won't go past apple screen and computer won't see it when pluged in

My son & I are new to this iPod thing & his has locked up. I couldn't find any where to ask Apple on there web site, So it falls to you. (I hope)
We have tried the reset thing using the "Menu Select" thing. But it just showes the Apple logo & never clears Some time the backlight comes up & stays on until we do another reset. Whith it like this my computer doesn't even see the iPod when we plug it in.
If you could send me down the right road or just point, It would realy help get this kid off my bsck.

have you tried manually forcing it into disk mode while its plugged into your computer, this can be accomplished by first doing a hard restart then emidietly holding down the center select button and play/pause button till the disk mode screen comes up...then hopefully your computer may recognize the ipod. and then you can go about reseting your ipod via itunes...

maybe its just a dud...i'd take it back to apple and ask for another one
