I apologize, because I'm sure this has been discussed before, but I couldn't find it. How big and when will the memory on the iPod touch go? I'm waiting for it to get to around 40-60 before I buy one. How long will it take for the touch to go that high, or will it?

Maybe, just maybe in 2010. Flash prices are not falling as fast as they used to. It costs $1000 to put a much bigger in physical size 64GB SSD in the MBA as of now. A 16GB chip is very expensive so Apple put two 8GB flash chips in the high end model of the iPod touch.

maybe 2015, maybe. as of now, if you want that storage, get a classic. IPT wont have that capacity for a long time. to expensive or to physically large

Yeah, I have a 80gb classic now (not the newest). It is fine, I will just keep it until it breaks. I just like all the features on the touch, but that's disappointing to hear it will be that long and expensive.

Apple could easily go to 32 GB if they wanted to. Going much larger than that might become an issue. Samsung though is due to roll out a new flash process this year that will easily result in much larger flash chips. Apple also has the option of using Samsung's stack chip technology to increase storage capacity.

I think the bigger issue right now is that Apple seems to want to institute very long update cycles with respect to the iPods. Hopefully the competition will make that more difficult for them to do.

by 2010 it will be an ipod think with 1 terabyte of memory.

you will transfer tune by just thinking of the tune.

I really don't think it'll be that long. Capacity updates always seem farfetched but come up sooner than you think. I think in two updates which should be about a year and a half or so.

because they may have something better.

we are talking about what may be and who can read s. job's head.

i would not think the new laptop from apple would not have a cd/dvd player/reader.

I hope storage capacities increase soon. I really want an iPod Touch but I went for the 80GB Classic instead because it's price:space ratio is much better.

That is the way it is with hard drives and I believe it will be this way for at least the next five years.

However, an SSD and the flash memory in the Touch are not the same.

I would expect to see the iPod Touch offered at 16GB & 32GB this year at similar price points to the current Touch models.
