My setup: M5 iPP, OWC T4 dock (image below), Apple Studio Display - all connected via included cable cables.

Adding: USB stereo speaker set. Speakers are wall-powered but get their signal via USB cable. Speakers have a USB-C input but came with a USB-A to USB-C cable.

The iPad recognizes the speakers but only if I use my own USB-C cable going to a USB-C port like one of the ones on the display. If I connect the speakers to one of the dock’s 10 Gb/s USB-A ports, the speakers are recognized, but the iPP will always use the Display for audio output.

I’ve swapped dock ports and and USB-A cables without luck. The dock’s USB-A ports are all fine, as tested with other devices.

Is this normal? Why does USB-C work for audio but not USB-A? Note that (1) I had the exact same experience with a different set of speakers and (2) my microphone (also USB-C but came with a C-to-A cable) works no problem with any of the dock’s 3 rear USB-A ports.

This is my first iPP and first (in a very long time) attempt at using this device in a desktop setting. The rest of my setup is working well but audio output is a mystery to me.
