I'm looking for the original ipsw file for my iPad Pro 12.9in (2nd generation, WIFI).

There are links from the usual websites, such as Redmond Pie, but the ipsw files downloaded from these links don't work in iTunes. Tells me it's not compatible with my device, even though the description says it should work with both Gen 1 and Gen 2 iPad Pro's.``

In particular, I used this link:iPad Pro (12.9-inch) (1st & 2nd generation)

However, I have also found firmwares from other, less well known sites. These sites have more IPSW versions, and in particular, they have IPSW versions specifically for my iPad Pro model (2nd gen, WIFI). These images do seem to work, but I'm hesitant to use them, given their somewhat unclear provenance

I examined the URL linked to on that page, and it does seem to refer to an Apple CDN. Does this mean it's safe? How come the normal IPSWs from most sites don't work? Is there anywhere I can find the official hash for this, so I can verify it's not been tempered with?

It's not possible to install any ipsw files that are not signed by apple. IOW, if the file has been tampered with, you won't be able to install it anyway.

To ensure you get the right file to begin with go to your device in iTunes and click on the serial number for your iPad until it shows device identifier. Make note of the numbers and download the firmware that matches. Personally I use ipsw.me, since it's much easier to use. On their website click the iPad picture, then type the two numbers you saw in iTunes as #,#. Click the only picture that shows.
