I've tried filming 4k a few times and every time it looks very choppy and seems to be dropping a lot of frames. I wonder if anyone else has had any luck with it. It seems to be virtually unusable for me especially if the camera is moved at all or if there is motion in the shot.

4K is fine with me. Though it is 30fps, not 60fps if that is what you are comparing too.

Try closing all apps, and do a hard reboot (power+home button till phone turns off and on again)

I uploaded the video file to Vimeo to try it and on Vimeo the playback is smooth. I'm guessing that means my 2009 MBP can't actually play back 4k video correctly - is that the issue?

Not only does your Mac not have a 4K screen, it's also going to have a hard time decoding the video anyway... So yes.

What are you using to play the video? Use VLC.
