Friend of a friend is offering me his MacBook Air (very well kept with 3M skin all around it and a screen protector).

It's got the 8gb of ram and the SSD hard drive (I don't need a bunch of space, have external storage for that). It's running Maverick as well.

I think it's a really good deal and he's hooking me up, but wanted to get some further thought. I didn't want to spend any more than $1k at the most...

1.8 GHz Intel Core i5
8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
128gb SSD Hard Drive

judging by the following ebay items, it looks like fair value for an in person trade:

if i was planning to buy a macbook air, though, i'd try to save for at least a 2013 model. i feel like the difference in battery life alone is worth the upgrade. and if you wait long enough, rumor has it the air is up for a complete redesign for the 2014 model year.

Yeah I figured fair value... I couldn't find any for under $900 in my area though. I guess I'll hop on this.

Yeah... unfortunately, I can't wait. My 2009 MBP finally bit the dust and my wife spilled water all over it lol. Was in the market for a quick flip.
I'll take good care of this and sell it if/when something better comes out in 2014. These things hold their value pretty well :)
Have the box and everything so even in 2013/2014 I should be able to sell it for no less than $700

I also agree that it's a fair market price and worth it. And I would also try and find the funds to move into the 2013. Unless battery life is not of huge concern. The 2012' still lasts quite a long time it's just the 2013 has AMAZING battery life.

Tough to find a 2013 MBA with 8gb ram for anywhere near this price though... I can find some 4gb ram for around this price but I can't make that downgrade to be honest.
Also, battery life isn't that important but agree, the difference in 2012 vs 2013 is insane

You should check to see if this is one of the 2012 models that has the SSD recall/replacement issue. If it is, have your friend get it replaced, since he is the original owner and it should be covered.

Do you need the original receipt or purchase for it to be replaced?

Well Best Buy had a new 2013 for $950 last week. (And also in September) Based on that i would say no. If you factor in the SSD issue with 128GB SSD units, $800 would be a no go for me. (Also 11" version of 2012 was $699 last week new)
